DC SCISSOR LIFTS – ANSI/SAIA CHANGES
With the publication of the new ANSI/SAIA regulations for Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), there are many changes to the DC Electric Powered scissor lifts. Some of the changes to the equipment include:
• New serial numbers and the SJ designation for all models.
• SKYCODED™ electrical system incorporating Tilt, Load Sensing, and Overload Protection circuits.
• Half and full height entrance gates – no more mid-rail chains.
• Taller railing and kick plate heights.
There are some changes that you can easily see. The platform, the scissor assembly, and the base are redesigned, with a new style plastic control box and control cable mounting. The pothole bar mechanisms have been redesigned and are mounted to the frame instead of the trays, and a new model battery charger is on-board.
A closer inspection will reveal the use of dual angle sensors to eliminate the mechanical limit switches on the scissor arms. The separate tilt switch has been replaced and the SKYCODED™ controller module has the tilt switch built into it. Mounted on the lift cylinders are Pressure Transducers that are used in the overload protection and load sensing systems.
Once you open the hydraulic/electrical tray, you will notice the large relay/wiring panel has been replaced by a small display panel/keypad that interfaces with the SKYCODED™ controller module. The SKYCODED™ controller module is mounted in the center of the unit on the frame – not in the hydraulic tray. The SKYCODED™ controller module uses the display panel and keypad to allow the technician to enter the system and perform troubleshooting and diagnostics.
Operationally, the base controls will now operate with the platform control box E-stop pushed in. The Overload system will alert the operator that the platform is overloaded. The Battery Charger is more user friendly with easy-to-read indicators. The Emergency Lowering system is now all-electric and operates from a single location.
There are other changes and operational differences compared to the DC Electric scissor models that were made in the past. Please consult the correct Operator’s Manual for the serial number of the unit you are looking at and familiarize yourself with the new operation instructions and component locations.
